Autonomous Driving and Legal Challenges: ARS Webinar, 19 June 2026

Autonomous driving: What happens when software and AI take the wheel in self-driving cars?
Who bears the risk when automated systems malfunction? The owner, the driver, the manufacturer or the software developer? How far do the new obligations under the EU Product Liability Directive, the EU Data Act, EU data-protection law and cybersecurity requirements extend when vehicles become data platforms on wheels?
- Insurance law for electric and automated vehicles
- Liability in the event of system failure
- Data protection and cybersecurity in the mobility context
- Legal obligations relating to intelligent vehicles
In this webinar hosted by ARS (Akademie für Recht und Steuern), I address the key legal challenges surrounding automated vehicles in Austria and the European Union. The webinar focuses on liability and insurance issues in the event of system failures, the current legal framework under the Austrian Road Traffic Act and EU legislation, and the practical effects of the Data Act, data-protection law and IT-security requirements. A further focus is placed on contractual obligations and risks throughout the lifecycle of intelligent vehicles – from development and commissioning to maintenance, updates and recalls.
The aim is to provide practical guidance on the liability, evidentiary and documentation requirements that already apply today, as well as developments that can be expected in the coming years, including changes relating to the burden of proof and presumptions of causation. Participants will receive a concise overview enabling them to make legally sound decisions in the field of automated mobility.
